car&bike Expert Take
"Kia has abandoned the traditional, swept-back crossover styling in favour of an upright, boxy footprint for the Syros EV. The result is that you get a sub-4-metre electric vehicle that feels quite spacious on the inside."
Keeping cabin technology and practical space, the South Korean brand recently launched the Kia Syros EV in India, in the competitive sub-4-metre electric crossover segment. Rather than making its entry-level variant bare-bones, Kia went all out with premium features right from the start, including all-wheel disc brakes and a unique cockpit layout.
This electric SUV is for both city commuters and intercity travellers. It offers two battery packs: a 42 kWh standard and a massive 51.4 kWh Extended Range (ER) option. And to lower the initial barrier to entry, Kia also introduced a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership model, which drops the upfront ex-showroom price down to just Rs. 7.99 lakh.
Bilal Firfiray took the new Syros EV for a spin to find out its real-world performance. He notes,
“The Kia Syros EV comes into the game with a modern design, spacious cabin, strong performance, decent range and also aggressive pricing.”
The Syros EV uses a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, but the power output is different depending on the battery pack you choose.
Powertrain Specifications
| Battery & Powertrain | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 42 kWh Standard Range | 133 bhp (99 kW) | 255 Nm | Single-Speed Automatic | Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) |
| 51.4 kWh Extended Range (ER) | 169 bhp (126 kW) | 255 Nm | Single-Speed Automatic | Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) |
Key Takeaways
- The 169 bhp ER setup pulls the crossover from zero to 100 kmph in 8.1 seconds.
- Drivers can manage energy flow using steering-mounted paddle shifters.
- These paddle shifters control the multi-step regenerative braking system.
City Driving Experience
- The electric power steering is quite light at low speeds, making city commutes convenient.
- Torque is quick and available from a standstill, letting the car close traffic gaps quickly.
- There’s an iPEDAL single-pedal driving feature available for handling traffic duties.
- You get Eco Mode for handling congested city streets, and Normal Mode for mixed usage.

Highway Driving Experience
- The 169 bhp ER powertrain feels relaxed and never strained at highway cruising speeds.
- There’s a Sport Mode, which offers rapid acceleration.
- Highway overtaking never feels like the car’s powertrain runs out of breath.

The Syros EV has a highly unconventional, square-jawed silhouette.
Bilal also points out,
"There aren't many visual differences between the petrol and electric versions."
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Kia Syros EV | Tata Nexon EV | MG Windsor EV |

The exterior styling features sharp, futuristic elements that contrast heavily with its boxy proportions.

- There’s a glossy black skid plate trimmed with body-coloured aero inserts.
- The front also houses dedicated LED front fog lamps.

Side Profile
- The squared-off wheel arches have 16-inch or 17-inch Crystal Cut dual-tone aero alloy wheels.
- Glossy black roof rails, subtle side-door garnishes, and glossy black ORVMs are present.
- There are also integrated LED turn signals on the sides.

Rear Profile
- The tailgate is relatively flat and near-vertical; it actually means more internal boot space.
- The high-mounted Starmap LED combination tail lamps mirror the front lighting design.
- An integrated roof spoiler houses an LED high-mounted stop lamp.
- There’s also a glossy black rear skid plate alongside a shark fin antenna here.

The cabin of the new Syros EV gives off the vibe of a minimalist, lounge-like atmosphere.
Cabin Layout and Quality
- The dashboard is remarkably uncluttered.
- Physical buttons are very few; there’s a massive digital binnacle sitting on the cockpit.
- A unique double D-cut steering wheel sits ahead of the driver.
- A highly practical floating central console separates the front seats.
- This console features open storage bins, retractable cup holders, and a sliding cover.
- The cabin uses varied dual-tone leatherette upholstery themes across different trims.

Seating Comfort
Front Row
- Front occupants get wide, supportive seats.
- The top-spec variants offer a four-way power-adjustable driver's seat.
- The tall roofline and wide door apertures make getting in and out incredibly easy.
Second Row
- The rear bench uses a versatile 60:40 split setup with sliding and reclining functions.
- This allows owners to trade rear legroom for extra luggage space dynamically.
- Rear passengers get dedicated air-conditioning vents and pull-up door window sunshades.
- A fold-down central armrest with cupholders is also available.
- Extremely tall adults get ample headroom without feeling cramped.

Kia offers the Syros EV in seven personas: HTK, HTK+, HTX, HTK+ ER, HTX ER, HTX+ ER, and X-Line ER.
Variant | Battery, Motor & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
HTK | 42 kWh, Single Motor, Automatic | Rs. 13.49 Lakh |
HTK+ | 42 kWh, Single Motor, Automatic | Rs. 14.99 Lakh |
HTX | 42 kWh, Single Motor, Automatic | Rs. 15.99 Lakh |
HTK+ ER | 51.4 kWh, Single Motor, Automatic | Rs. 16.99 Lakh |
HTX ER | 51.4 kWh, Single Motor, Automatic | Rs. 17.99 Lakh |
HTX+ ER | 51.4 kWh, Single Motor, Automatic | Rs. 19.49 Lakh |
X-Line ER | 51.4 kWh, Single Motor, Automatic | Rs. 19.99 Lakh |
The 42 kWh battery has an MIDC-certified range of 443 km, while the 51.4 kWh battery has around 526 km. Kia offers early adopters a lifetime battery warranty of 15 years and unlimited kilometres for the initial owner. Subsequent owners get 8 years or 1,60,000 kilometres. As for fast charging, the battery can replenish from 10% to 80% in 39 minutes with a 100 kW DC charger. At the same time, an 11 kW AC home wallbox charger fully tops up the 42 kWh battery in approximately 4 hours, while the 51.4 kWh pack takes about 4 hours and 50 minutes.
Bilal observes,
"A realistic driving range of around 430- 450 km seems likely for the larger battery version."
Battery | MIDC-Certified Range | Real-World City Range | Real-World Highway Range |
42 kWh (Standard Range) | 443 km | 340-360 km | 290-310 km |
51.4 kWh (Extended Range) | 526 km | 430-450 km | 360-380 km |
Kia has made sure that the Syros EV’s base variants receive the same structural protection as top-tier models.
Passive Safety & Crash Protection
- Six SRS airbags are available covering the driver, front passenger, sides, and curtain areas.
- The body has a high-strength steel structure with impact-absorbing crumple zones.
- ISOFIX child-seat anchorages are complete with top tether points on the outer rear seats.
- Three-point ELR seatbelts with seatbelt reminders are given for all cabin occupants.
- There are rollover sensors and an impact-sensing auto door unlock feature as well.
Active Safety & Stability Systems
- ABS, ESC, and Vehicle Stability Management support the all-wheel disc brakes.
- There’s Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Highline Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold.
- The X-Line ER model gets a Level 2 ADAS suite with 16 autonomous functions.
- A 360-degree camera system helps with the car’s parking manoeuvres.
The Syros EV's cabin houses some high-end convenience tech.
Infotainment & Interface
- The 30-inch Wide Trinity Panoramic Display Panel is a single glass panel.
- It combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a central 12.3-inch HD touchscreen.

- Other features include a built-in smart dashcam with dual cameras, a digital smartphone key, a wireless phone charger, and 100W Type-C fast charging ports.
- The main rear boot offers between 390 litres and 465 litres of cargo volume, depending on the position of the second-row seats.
- This car has a 16-litre covered frunk under the bonnet, which is a clean space to store portable charging cables.
- Other practical storage spaces include a floating central console with a sliding cover, retractable cup holders, seatback pockets, and door bottle holders.
This boxy crossover has a planted driving character.
Bilal says this about its profile,
"It's smooth, silent and effortless in everyday driving."
City Driving
- The light electric power steering makes darting through crowded streets effortless.
- The column-mounted Shift-by-Wire stalk and EPB with Auto Hold help out in city traffic.
- The suspension irons out potholes and expansion joints, keeping road harshness at bay.
- The i-Pedal mode allows you to slow down smoothly using regenerative braking.
Highway Driving
- Speed is consistent on the highway, and the suspension also handles most undulations well.
- The car’s low centre of gravity prevents the tall roofline from causing excessive body roll.
- The standard all-wheel disc brakes have progressive pedal feedback and high stopping power.

Five core persona levels and two battery options define the Syros EV’s stable for the Indian market.
Variant | Battery | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
HTK | 42 kWh | 30-inch display, six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, EPB | Tech seekers on a budget |
HTK+ | 42 kWh | Adds 16-inch aero alloys, LED DRLs, cruise control, rearview camera | Value-focused city commuters |

The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- Sports car-like low-slung, aerodynamic exterior styling
- High-mounted rear turn indicators
If regular city commutes are prioritised more, then the base battery pack provides enough value. But if the goal is to cover longer distances, the 51.4 kWh loaded trims should be preferred more.
Best for Urban Lifestyle: HTK+ (42 kWh)
Priced at Rs. 14.99 Lakh (ex-showroom), the HTK+ variant gets most of the needed essentials for daily city commuters. It pairs the 42 kWh battery with creature comforts like the 30-inch display panel, 16-inch aero alloy wheels, cruise control, and a rear-view camera. You get a full feature suite without needing to pay extra for intercity range.
Best Value Overall: HTX ER (51.4 kWh)
At Rs. 17.99 Lakh (ex-showroom), the HTX ER is usually considered the most well-rounded variant. Upgrading to this trim unlocks the larger 51.4 kWh battery with a 526 km claimed range and the punchier 169 bhp motor that makes highway sprints more fun. You also get the dual-pane panoramic sunroof and highly practical sliding rear seats for long family road trips.
Best Fully Loaded Package: X-Line ER
The X-Line ER tops out at Rs. 19.99 Lakh (ex-showroom), but justifies its price tag by offering segment-first luxury. It comes fully stacked with the 16-feature Level 2 ADAS suite, 360-degree camera, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) charging, all-row seat ventilation, and a digital key.
The Syros EV competes in a busy electric crossover segment against established rivals, some names being the Tata Nexon EV, MG Windsor EV, and Tata Punch EV.
Model | Battery & Range | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price |
42 kWh / 51.4 kWh (443-526 km) | 30-inch display, sliding rear seats, all-row ventilation, V2L | Rs. 13.49 - Rs. 19.99 Lakh
30 kWh / 45 kWh (275-489 km) | Proven track record, aggressive styling, wide service network | Rs. 12.49 - Rs. 17.69 Lakh
38 kWh / 52.9 kWh (331-449 km) | Lounge-like rear seat comfort, massive glass roof, BaaS option | Rs. 14.70 - Rs. 19.00 Lakh
30 kWh / 40 kWh (365-468 km) | Compact urban footprint, lower starting price point | Rs. 9.69 - Rs. 12.79 Lakh |
Which Electric Crossover Should You Choose?
- Choose the Kia Syros EV if you want maximum interior cabin space, a futuristic 30-inch screen layout, sliding rear seats, and a real-world range over 400 km.
- Choose the Tata Nexon EV if you prefer a traditional crossover silhouette with an established market presence and a solid body structure that secures its occupants.
- Choose the MG Windsor EV if rear seat luxury and chauffeur-driven comfort are your primary needs. It has a distinct MPV-style space to it.
- Choose the Tata Punch EV if you want a secure car from a relatively lower price point, one that also offers decent driving range and a five-star Bharat NCAP safety rating.
Pros
- While claimed range is about 520 km, real-world expectations settle around a usable 430-450 km.
- Its upright windscreen, tall seating position, and generous glass area gives it excellent outward visibility.
- The floating center console takes advantage of it being EV to free up floor space and create extra cabin storage.
- The rear seats have generous legroom, thoughtful backrest recline, back and forth sliding and ventilation.
- Regenerative braking provides three selectable levels alongside a one-pedal driving mode.
- Top-end X-Line trim brings modern interior themes like Cool Blue and Hunter Green upholstery.
Cons
- You can feel its firm ride quality when driving over broken city roads.
- Under-floor battery placement raises the floor height slightly and affects thigh support.
- The steering response feels artificially weighted and lacks feedback.
- Its boxy, upright exterior design does not appeal to all buyers.
- Difference in the Eco and Normal driving modes’ power delivery is negligible.
Verdict
The Kia Syros EV offers a unique perspective with its strong mix of space, usability, and modern interior tech. Surprisingly, its boxy proportions somehow align with its EV aura, while the linear power delivery, intuitive one-pedal driving, and versatile cabin make it a practical family car.
On the downside, its firm low-speed ride quality and muted steering feedback can take away from the overall experience. But with its competitive introductory pricing and a real-world range upwards of 400 km, this EV can be a viable alternative.

- All-rounder fun city car - Chota package Bada dhamaka4.0Tata Punch Smart CNG(पेट्रोल+सीनजी)The Tata Punch Smart CNG is a compelling entry-level compact SUV for buyers seeking a practical, safe, and economical daily driver. Despite being the base CNG variant, it retains the Punch's rugged SUV styling, commanding driving position, and 193 mm ground clearance, making it well-suited for Indian road conditions. Powered by Tata's 1.2-litre bi-fuel engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, it offers smooth city drivability and impressive fuel efficiency, while the twin-cylinder CNG technology preserves a usable boot space—an advantage over conventional single-cylinder CNG setups. Where the Smart CNG shines is in its value proposition. It delivers Tata's hallmark strong build quality and safety credentials at an accessible price, making it an attractive option for first-time buyers or those upgrading from a hatchback. However, the base variant does miss out on several convenience and infotainment features that are available in higher trims, and the naturally aspirated engine feels modest during quick overtakes or fully loaded highway drives. Even so, if your priorities are low running costs, high safety, and SUV practicality over premium features, the Tata Punch Smart CNG is one of the strongest value-for-money choices in its segment.By Chirag Bhanushaliदिनांक: Jul 30, 2026 01:58 PM76
