This review is based on car&bike’s road test of the Toyota Hilux, where the vehicle was evaluated for on-road usability, off-road capability and everyday practicality.

The Toyota Hilux ranks among the best pickups on the market, and we believe this reputation is well-deserved. Its history of durability and proven off-road capability allows the Hilux to stand tall amid competition.

The year 1968 marked the beginning of one of the world’s most robust vehicles, as it was the launch year of the Toyota Hilux. Hilux has evolved through eight generations and has sold over 20 million units, proving its durability and earning the trust of customers across demanding markets and tough working conditions.

The Toyota Hilux in India has a starting price of Rs. 30.40 lakh. It is a five-seater, comes in three main trims, and has a single engine option, which can be paired with two different transmission options.

With 225mm of ground clearance, we believe the Hilux is vastly superior when it comes to an off-road adventure. Toyota offers distinctive options like the Emotional Red colour, and depending on the variant selected, the Hilux can achieve a fuel economy of up to 12.6 kmpl.

The Hilux is truly a legendary pickup that has proven time and time again that it is extremely capable.

Toyota Hilux Performance

It has a robust 2,755 cc diesel engine that translates technical specifications into effortless real-world driving. We found that the Hilux delivers power exactly when you need it most, giving you absolute confidence whether navigating highway overtakes or tackling unpredictable terrain.

• Commanding torque: You get 420 Nm of torque in the manual format and a massive 500 Nm in the automatic version between 1,600-2,800rpm.
• Off-road hardware: The fully functioning 4WD drive train and high ground clearance are purposefully designed to conquer rough landscapes.
• Touring range: An 80-litre fuel tank is a massiveplus that ensures you can cover vast distances without constant fuel stops.
• Overall capability: The setup allows you to drive off the tracks easily as it is built to perform far beyond the pavement.

Toyota Hilux Design

Carrying the Toyota tradition of the IMV platform, the Hilux commands a dominant and aggressive road presence that dwarfs many standard vehicles. Toyota has purposefully designed this pickup to handle rough conditions while providing a stable and planted feel on any surface.

• Double cab layout: This configuration offers practical utility space alongside comfortable passenger accommodation for the Indian market.
• Massive footprint: The vehicle sits 530mm longer than the Fortuner SUV, with a stretched three-metre wheelbase for superior high-speed stability.
• Turning radius: The sheer size results in a 6.4-metre turning circle, which requires some effort during tight city manoeuvres.
• Wheel options: The Standard variant is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels while the higher trims upgrade to commanding 18-inch alloys.

Toyota Hilux Exterior

When we consider the Toyota Hilux from the exterior, it is clearly visible that it has been designed with a purpose in mind. Toyota has managed to give the Hilux a bold and modern look while still retaining the rugged image that has made it one of the most reliable brands in the market.

Front Profile

When viewed from the front, the large trapezoidal grille is the focal point of the front fascia. The dusk-sensing headlamps, halogen on the standard trim and LED with daytime running lights on the higher variants, on either side of the grille are a feature that not only adds convenience but also enhances visibility in low-light conditions. The LED daytime running lights add a premium look to the overall design. The chrome highlights on the front bumper add a sophisticated touch to the rugged image of the Hilux.

Side Profile

The side profile of the Hilux has a clean and muscular look. The lines of the body are simple and functional, with a focus on utility. The addition of side mirrors improves everyday usability and comes with a contemporary feature package.

Toyota has also added some chrome trim work on the door handles, which gives the Hilux a more premium look, especially on the higher variants. 

Rear Profile

At the rear, the Hilux carries the same design theme. The LED rear lamps not only enhance the visibility of other road users but also impart a more contemporary look to the rear of the vehicle, especially when viewed at night.

The emphasis on the presence of the steel step rear bumper makes loading and unloading the cargo bed much easier. This small detail serves to increase the Hilux’s status as a work vehicle without compromising on looks.

Cabin Layout and Quality

Take a look inside the Hilux, and we are greeted by a spacious cabin with an all-black theme. Toyota has emphasized the utility aspect, and this is reflected in the design. There is ample storage space with large pockets in the doors, cup holders, an armrest in the centre console, and two glove compartments with one featuring a chilling function.

The interior also features an eight-inch touchscreen system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, although the instrument console is partially analog with a small MID.

Seating Comfort

Front Row

In the front row, comfort is good, with adequate lumbar 

support. The higher variants come with a power-adjustable driver’s seat and dual-zone automatic climate control, which makes long drives a breeze.

Second Row

In the second row, the double-cab configuration gives us usable space. The second-row comfort is adequate, though the support for the under-thigh area could be better. Carrying three adults side by side is a squeeze.

Pricing for the Toyota Hilux varies across the range, as each variant positions itself as a premium lifestyle pickup truck in the Indian market. 

Toyota Hilux Mileage

Based on our observations, the Hilux offers a great balance of power and fuel economy, especially for those who require a workhorse that can perform heavy duties.

The average fuel economy of most diesel variants of the Hilux is pegged at 10 to 14 kmpl, depending on the engine variant, transmission, and driving conditions.

On the highway, we have observed that the Hilux can easily hit the higher end of the scale, especially when driven at a constant speed. 

Whether we are hauling loads, traversing rough roads, or embarking on long journeys, the Hilux has been remarkably consistent in its performance.

Toyota Hilux Safety

Toyota engineers have integrated comprehensive protection into the fundamental structure of the vehicle. This model has not yet been rated by Global/Bharat NCAP. However, we clearly observe that the reinforced ladder-frame chassis and standard safety suite provide great peace of mind for you and your passengers.

• Comprehensive airbags: Seven airbags are distributed throughout the cabin as standard equipment across all variants to assure layers of protection.
• Active control systems: Anti-lock braking, brake assist, and vehicle stability control maintain traction on low-grip surfaces and during emergencies.
• Convenience aids: A reverse parking camera and hill assist control make managing the large size of the truck much easier in the city or on inclines.
• Passenger restraints: Three-point seatbelts and adjustable headrests ensure secure seating for all occupants across both rows.

Toyota Hilux Tech

The Toyota Hilux is the type of pickup truck we would suggest if customers are looking for something that offers the ability to get the job done without the usual trade-offs that come with a “workhorse” truck.

In the tech spec, Toyota wisely embraces the needs of the modern market. We find a nicely appointed interior with improved entertainment and helpful connectivity options, and the sort of driver aids that make life easier daily. These enhancements make the vehicle more pleasant to travel in. 

Toyota Hilux Boot Space

When evaluating a pickup truck, usability is determined by the load bed and payload capacity rather than a traditional enclosed boot. The Hilux acts as a highly functional work truck, offering exceptional storage flexibility that bridges the gap between a weekday work vehicle and a weekend adventure companion.

• Broad load bed: The cargo area is deep with high sides to allow for the secure loading of construction materials or camping gear.
• Heavy payload: The vehicle supports a practical payload capacity of 470 kg to handle demanding haulage tasks without breaking a sweat.
• Cabin storage: You will find functional door pockets and cup holders integrated seamlessly into the interior layout alongside a chilled glove compartment.
• Hidden compartments: Sufficient storage space under the second-row seats allows you to stow smaller equipment safely out of sight.

Toyota Hilux Ride and Handling

The Toyota Hilux has always been designed with carrying capacity in mind, and it is a rugged, ladder-frame vehicle designed to withstand tough conditions. Over speed breakers and potholes, the Hilux is well-behaved, and the leaf spring rigid axle rear suspension feels more durable when carrying a payload.

On the highway, stability is a major virtue. The steering is not razor-sharp, but it is sufficiently accurate for a pickup truck and provides good feedback. Take the Hilux off-road, and it is a completely different experience. High ground clearance, wheel articulation, and underbody toughness give us the confidence to attack trails, mud, sand, and rough terrain without a second thought.

Toyota has been able to design the Hilux in such a manner that it appeals to a broad spectrum of customers. The Toyota Hilux top model and base model do not come in the form of a one-size-fits-all offering. Rather, it has different features that are centred around certain requirements. 

Toyota Hilux: Our Recommendations

If we are selecting the Toyota Hilux just as a tool for work, we would suggest opting for the Standard trim, as it comes with essential qualities like toughness, resale value, and low risk of mechanical failure over the long term.

The double-cab mid-spec models are the best as it gives comfort, safety, and practicality, while still being tough enough for the occasional bout of off-road driving. These models offer the best road presence and in-car experience. 

Toyota Hilux Competitors

Toyota Hilux has set the benchmark for rugged capability in markets like India, where roads and heavy loads demand the best performance. So here we compare it to its primary rival, the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross. The Ford Ranger is included here only as a global reference model, since it is not currently available in India as of 2026.
